The Maldives National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MNCCI) has taken control over the former Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) camp on Ameenee Magu.
Vice President of the Ismail Asif said that MNCCI took over the plot to build a financial centre and that the organization is currently seeking funds from banks.
MNCCI had previously revealed that a Chinese company had expressed interest in building a financial centre on the plot but construction is to be pursued through an international tender.
Asif said that the plot will not be leased for any political activities as the board of the MNCCI does not approve of it.
“We do not get a rent payment from the plot now and it is under the control of the organization. Though construction of a building might be delayed, the land will not be leased for any political activities,” he said.
The organization had claimed before that the plot was not leased to conduct political activities and that the lease expired last year. The organization stated that it had received several complaints that MDP was conducting political activities there.
